Early Learning Builds Self-esteem
Emotional development or self-esteem has been shown to be severely affected in the formative stages of learning. In other words, as children begin to formally learn they experience emotionally charged feelings about who they are and how well they are learning. Most children who struggle with learning blame themselves. Day after day and month after month the process of learning teaches these children to feel ashamed of themselves-ashamed of their minds-ashamed of how they learn.
Poor learning performance" produces a perception of stupidity and dumbness to peers. Clearly to the youngster who is struggling that is shame. They feel like they're failures. The whole education process becomes so imbued with, stuffed with shame that children can develop an aversion to everything that is learning"(9-08-03 children of the code interviews). In other words, this loss of self-esteem becomes generalized. If you cannot decipher words on a page the shame it causes leads to difficulties in other areas of learning. Further it can lead to persuing other things where the child can succeed. Many of these other areas are not socially acceptable. In addition, it is a vicious cyle the more they cannot learn the more shame thy face which in turn makes it harder to learn.
Children come up with aversion strategies to avoid being embarrassed. However there is no way to avoid learning. Society mandates it. It is not an option in our schools. For those who have trouble the experience is confusing, frustrating and shaming. They are at risk of becoming ashamed of how they think, how they learn, and who they are. Some of the consequences are:
- damage to cognitive and emotional health
- being ashamed of one's mind and learning abilities
- loss of self-esteem
- inability to become creative or critical thinkers
- loss of income opportunity
- loss of significant part of the population contributing to the economy
If you separate out reading (this is where most of the research is) it is true that illiteracy rates correlate with every major area of social concern be it: juvenile deliquency,teen pregnancy, prison population, failure to graduate, social violence, drug problems, and unemployment.
This is why it is so important to get children off to a good start. Teach them when they are ready to learn in a non-competetive surrounding. If we're in the presense of one who loves us we feel safe if their is shame it is very brief and not as toxic.

Give them the tools so they are not at the mercy of a system which cannot cope.Don't let your child be one the 68% of 4th graders and 60% of the 12th graders in the U.S. who are not proficient readers.
